Joanne King Herring, the political operative behind "Charlie Wilson's War," the hit movie, will be our fascinating guest. Herring was the visionary in the covert operations run by former Lufkin, Texas, congressman Charlie Wilson and the CIA that supported the Afghan people when they were invaded by the Soviet Union. The defeat of the Soviet army is credited with leading to the end of the Cold War. Wilson had a heart transplant at Methodist Hospital in October of 2007 and was unable to attend.
Our distinguished honoree, Mark Wallace, President and Chief Executive Officer of Texas Children’s Hospital, will receive the Glen W. Karsten Memorial Award** for his contribution to saving the lives of children. Families whose children were saved by organ transplants and who are patients at Texas Children’s will be special guests.
One of Mr. Wallace’s many accomplishments during his prestigious career was his contribution to the field of organ transplantation. Prior to joining Texas Children’s, Mr. Wallace was a senior vice president at Methodist Hospital. In 1984, under the guidance of renowned surgeon, Dr. Michael DeBakey, The Methodist Hospital decided to re-enter the organ transplantation field. Working closely with Dr. DeBakey, Mr. Wallace created a multi-disciplinary structure involving the leadership of Texas Children’s and its affiliated medical school, Baylor College of Medicine.
Methodist now has one of the largest and most active transplant programs in the country. Mr. Wallace joined Texas Children’s in 1989, one of the pre-eminent and largest children’s hospitals in the nation. Under his leadership, the hospital has achieved many milestones and tremendous growth. Among them is included development of a world-renowned program for transplantation of the kidney, liver, lung, heart, bone marrow and stem cells, working with many distinguished surgeons and pediatric subspecialists at Texas Children’s Hospital and Baylor College of Medicine.

Join us as we honor Mr. Wallace and the brave families who are living life to the fullest, thanks to his work and the selfless, caring individuals who made a decision to be organ donors and gave the greatest gift - LIFE |
**In 1968, Mrs. Karsten and four friends founded The Living Bank, the nation’s first organ donor registry. She served as its president for many years. The vision of these women has inspired millions to become potential organ donors over the last 40 years. | | | |
